You don’t have to be a video game geek to appreciate the musical “ARCADEFIRE! [The Redemption of Billy Mitchell]” from Catalyst Repertory Theatre, currently showing during the IndyFringe Festival. In fact, all you need is a sense of humor and appreciation for the spirit of competition!

ARCADEFIRE! [The Redemption of Billy Mitchell]” weaves together a musical tale of competition, friendship, and Donkey Kong. Video Game Player of the Century, Billy Mitchell, had it all – great hot sauce, great hair, and the number one ranking in Donkey Kong. A 2007 documentary featuring gaming rival Steve Wiebe thrust the classic gamer back into the spotlight (and ruined his reputation). The show follows Billy as he faces the worst accusation an arcade champion could face: cheating!

For those of you not aware of this gamer scandal, the authenticity of Billy Mitchell’s scores had been questioned for years at Kong Off events and in online forums. Despite years of rumors, Billy wasn’t officially stripped of his “Donkey Kong” high scores  until 2018 after video evidence was revealed. He was also banned from submitting scores to Twin Galaxies, the largest tracker of video game world records. This action made Steve Wiebe the official first million-point record holder.

Witty and delightful, this show is a must-see! The King of Kong, Billy Mitchell, gets sucked into the world of high score controversy with self-proclaimed nemesis Steve Wiebe, and it’s wonderful! The original music and lyrics tell the (mostly) true story of Donkey Kong and deceit.
