I wasn’t sure what to expect when I took my seat on Saturday afternoon for “A Little Business at the BIG TOP.” It was described to be like Popeye meets Chaplin in a Bugs Bunny cartoon, so I figured it would be fun no matter what. David Gaines was part of last year’s festival and I remembered hearing great things about his show “7 (x1) Samurai” from multiple people. There was no way I was going to miss a trip to the circus this time around!

Using mostly non-verbal communication, David Gaines took the audience through one zany day at the circus. There were lions, tigers, and bears (oh my). There was a ringmaster with an attitude problem. There was even an epic fight atop a tightrope! Once I settled into the physical comedy, I was transported to the Big Top. His use of facial expressions, physical movement, sound, and directional hand gestures were spot on and his energy was infectious. The piece was playful and the story was ridiculous and thrilling.

“A Little Business at the BIG TOP” was my first storytelling/physical comedy show at IndyFringe and it was delightful. Thanks for drawing the lines of the story, so to speak, and then allowing me to color it in with my imagination, David. I hope you are proud of the hard work to create one of the “Greatest [2015 IndyFringe] Shows on Earth.”
