It’s a tricky thing, planning your IndyFringe schedule. I hit the jackpot though when I kicked off this year’s festival with the 6pm performance of Camp Summer Camp by Defiance Comedy. The seven person cast brought us back to 1984 in cut off jeans and tube socks, and cheesy camp puns. They also brought us back to junior high with boner jokes.
We first meet Margo, a teen counselor back for another summer of lusting after Brett, head counselor and her best friend. Brett, of course, is lusting after someone else- namely a blonde in cut-off acid washed denim. There’s only one catch- during grade 11 the object of his desire has pledged herself to Jesus Christ. There’s the deranged, life-long career camp counselor who may or may not have spent the winter inside a moose carcass, and American newcomer, Champ Handsome. They are led by incestuous camp owners, who live , breath and breed summer camp.
There’s original music (you’ll leave singing), raunchy humor and funny lines that get repeated to the point becoming an inside joke between the cast and the audience. The show is filled with physical humor (poor Margo!), and you never know what’s going to happen next. You’ll leave this show wanting a s’more, a campfire and maybe a make-out session with your summer love.
