When Deadpan Jan walked onto the stage, she immediately reminded me of someone. She reminded me of my wife. Jan’s first words were about being an introvert. That was it. That’s why she reminded me of my wife. It was in her walk and her demeanor. My wife is an introvert and a public speaker. She walks onto the stage in the same way as Jan. Jan went on to explain that her husband, David, was an extrovert. OMG, that’s me. My wife and I have been married 30 years, Jan and David 36. My wife could relate to Jan.

Deadpan Jan’s new hip

Jan shared that she had recently had a hip replacement (did you know they won’t let you keep the old hip to put on your mantle?) Anyway, she hoped to receive physical therapy at home but was told she didn’t qualify because her husband could drive her to treatment. Jan paused, solemnly looked at the audience, and asked, “Why do people keep giving me reasons to kill my husband?” As I said, my wife could relate.

My favorite explanation of the difference between an introvert and an extrovert is whether being with a crowd gives you energy or takes it away. This holds true for my wife and me. People are sometimes confused that my wife, being an introvert, is such a powerful speaker. It’s not that introverts can’t hold forth. It’s that it takes energy. Jan proved that introverts can be stand-up comics. Good stand-up comedians at that.

Better living through delusional thinking

Jan’s delivery is dry, you could say it’s deadpan, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t funny. It is. I have two pages of punchlines from her show, but it would be unfair to share them here because you should see for yourself.

Jan’s life motto is “Better living through delusional thinking.” My wife would agree. She lives with me.

Add this show to your list, but if your partner is an extrovert, maybe leave them at home or better yet, bring them so they can hear the truth from Deadpan Jan
