Comedy is hard. Figuring out what makes people laugh takes lots of practice. Improv troupes add a level of complexity as they attempt to make us laugh on the fly, in the moment and in response to some of the most ridiculous things suggested by the audience. Act a Foo is up for the challenge.
From their opening song dedicated to a teacher named Jessica to contests and games, they play with each other, with the help of the audience the hour flew by, with lots of laughs along the way. My favorite bit was a game where they try to solve a murder with only grunts and pantomime from their partners as clues. These are five, very likable individuals and I found myself rooting for the underdog team members to guess the right answer, howling in laughter as the openly expressed confusion and cheering with delight as they came close to guessing.
.A few quick warnings. This IS an audience participation show, a few volunteers are selected from the audience. If you are picked, be a good sport and play along. They won’t ask much of you on stage, mostly relying on you to be the straight person to their humor. You will be asked to shout out phrases to be prompts for the actors. Many of the responses can be as funny as the comedians themselves! So, be sure to come prepared with your best phrases, topics, places, and famous people in the news.
Also, there may be a bit of adult content, so leave the kid at home for this one. It’s the perfect production to go to for a date night or with your pals for a night out on Mass Ave. Because it’s improv each show is different! So you can see this one again and again this fringe and still enjoy it every time!
