Okay, here’s the truth. I had no idea what this performance was about before I went to Hell’s 4th Ring. My wife was away at a conference. I Love IndyFringe, and I saw it was opening night for a new play. The performance began at 7:30. I had a sound system to set up at a hotel on the north side of Indy, and nothing to do after that. So, I went.

You Should Go

If you want to have fun — you should go see Hell’s 4th Ring (The Mall Musical). If you like snarky musicals – go. And if you like a witty script – go. If you appreciate a theatrical troupe, (Catalyst! Repertory) that knows what they’re doing – go. However, if you have ever worked in retail not only should you go, but you don’t want to miss this performance.

So, What’s it about?

The first scene opens at a mall, with retail shops, and retail clerks, all in retail H. E. double hockey sticks! It’s retail Hell. The opening number “Welcome to Hell’s Gate” (it’s where our dreams die) includes the entire cast dancing, singing, and giving the world the middle finger as the food court representative hawks his samples “Bourbon Chicken, Free Bourbon Chicken Bites!” Like I said, if you have ever worked in retail, then you’ve experienced some level of retail hell. Whether, you’ve worked part-time at a clothing store, or full time at a mall food court, or if you’re like my wife and me who each have more than ten years retail management experience (shiver!) not only should you go, but you don’t want to miss this.

Musical numbers throughout the performance brought a smile to my face, partially because I’m so happy not to be in retail, and because they were just fun. Numbers such as “Curvaceous Cobbler” (Did I, mention I once managed a shoe store?)”My favorite Window Display” and “Clocking Out” were well worth the price of admission.

It was Opening Night

I expected a few miscues, and there were some, but not enough for me not to recommend this musical. Like my friend said to me during the performance, “This isn’t Broadway.” But you know what, even with the occasional gaffs, some of the performances were as good as ones I’ve seen on 5th Avenue. As I said earlier, you should go see Hell’s 4th Ring (The Mall Musical).
