Comedian Ron Popp, a resident of Chicago and former Hoosier from Fairland, returned to Indiana with his show, “It Gets Bitter: The Ron Popp Story.” Covering everything from his upbringing in Indiana farm country to embarrassing audition stories to his hilarious attempts at dating and marriage, Ron’s story can relate to anyone. We’ve all been there. We’ve all had horrible dates and embarrassing experiences.

Usually when you go to a stand-up show, there’s a headliner and two or so comics before them. According to Ron and statistically speaking, all of them will be straight men telling jokes about things he knew nothing about. His show is all about introducing stories that represent anyone’s experiences. His overtone and differentiator is that he is gay, so a great deal of what he touches on are making fun of himself, the straight community, having body issues, and things anyone can relate to. These common themes among all people are what make this one of the better stand-up shows I’ve been to.

Ron was on fire the night my wife and I went to the show. I honestly don’t belly laugh very much, but this show almost had me, and the rest of the audience on the floor. If you are gay, straight, married, single, or anything in-between, I would highly recommend catching this. Please keep in mind that this show is definitely rated R. “It Gets Bitter” is at ComedySportz at 721 Mass Ave. on the following dates and times: Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 21, at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 24 at 3:00 p.m.
