This year for IndyFringe, Matthew Barron has teamed up with musician Amy Dolphin to create a dramatic plot with a little commentary and a lot of heart in Phantom of Fountain Square.
In this show, Samantha dreams of opening a restaurant in Fountain Square. She moves her family to this historic neighborhood and refuses to believe swirling rumors of the Phantom who sabotages new businesses with his mischievous gremlins. In order to keep her business from closing, Samantha must match wits with this mysterious being and face the dark side of nostalgia in a changing community.
The main character Samantha does a fantastic job keeping the story moving and interacting with her talented co-stars. She has great stage presence! The show may also bring to mind some of the issues that members of the Fountain Square community have faced during times of rapid change in the area. If you aren’t local, don’t worry – the shows themes are universally relatable.
Phantom of Fountain Square is also at one of the festival’s new venues this year! Very comfortable seating, stocked bar with bartender, and even a small food menu if you are interested in a snack. The food is good, the drinks are affordable (and strong). Talk about taking in a show surrounded in comfort!
Even if you don’t believe in the Phantom, you can’t deny that someone (or something) is causing new business to quickly come and go! There is definitely something weird going on in Fountain Square! Is it just old buildings, or is it something more sinister?
By the end of the show, you will be able to answer the plaguing question, “Is there a Phantom in Fountain Square?” You might even be inspired to venture off Mass Ave to Fountain Square in order to support the local business community there! Did you know that it was considered the theater district of Indianapolis from the early 1900s to the 1950s (before the neighborhoods decline)?
This show is a wonderful mis of drama, musical theater, and puppetry. Don’t allow the Phantom to stop this cast from telling their story!
