The Indianapolis Men’s Chorus took on a daring repertoire when they chose to focus on Green Day, Queen, queens, and rock operas. They gave an excellent performance reminiscent of a show choir revue. Each member had a moment to shine as they moved from the louder and harsher side of rock into rock ballads.
Sitting in the seats was a nostalgic experience because so many of the tunes were classic oldies but goodies. Also, singing along was encouraged, which made it an interactive experience. Many patrons could be seen swaying, clapping, and tapping their toes during nearly every song.
A highlight of the performance was the sheer joy that lit up every face of the chorus. They were clearly a close group of men who loved what they were doing. There was a sense of fun and intensity (in spite of the sweat dripping from both them…and the audience).
Amongst the individual songs, there were a few standouts. There was a strong performance of “Gethsemane” from Jesus Christ Superstar. Although it was taken out of the context of the story, the vocalist brought great emotion to the song. Also, it would be a travesty to leave out the vocal and fashion stylings of Miss Hedwig. She brought an added sense of dazzle and poise, which of course was enhanced by her sensational heels, wardrobe, and plethora of wigs.
Queen Day can certainly rock you…rock you.
